Where to stay
Bobbio, the Val Trebbia and the Passo del Penice by motorcycle: Lùlù Guest House in Dernice, Val Curone, is a bike-friendly B&B near Bobbio, with your motorbike safe under a sheltered carport and pleasantly cool in summer.
Bobbio is a medieval village in the Val Trebbia, at the foot of Monte Penice, which grew around the Abbey of San Colombano, founded in 614 and one of Europe's most important Benedictine monasteries. It holds the Touring Club Italiano Orange Flag and in 2020 was named Italy's Most Beautiful Village.
Don't miss the Ponte Gobbo, an eleven-arch bridge over the Trebbia river also called the Devil's Bridge; the abbey with its crypt and mosaic, the Museo della Città, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and the Malaspina Dal Verme Castle. In the square stands the statue of Saint Columbanus, patron of motorcyclists. At the table: maccheroni alla bobbiese, savoury ciambelline and the wines of the Colli Piacentini.
Bobbio sits at the centre of three roads much loved by motorcyclists: the Val Trebbia from Piacenza towards Liguria, the Val Tidone and the SP 461 climbing from Varzi to the Passo del Penice, with many bends to take with care, especially on holidays. From Lùlù Guest House you can combine Bobbio, the Val Trebbia and the Penice in one motorcycle tour and come back to sleep in Val Curone.
